Book of Condolence opened for the former Lord Mayor of Cork

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Dan Boyle has called for a Special Meeting of Cork City Council on Wednesday, June 26 2024 to pay tribute to former Lord Mayor, Minister of State and Cork North Central TD, Bernard Allen who died over the weekend.

Bernard Allen was Lord Mayor from 1988-1989 while his grandfather, James Allen was Lord Mayor in 1942. His uncle, the later Alderman Sammy Allen served on Cork Corporation until his passing in 1977.

The Allen family, former Lords Mayor of Cork and TDs and Senators attended the Special Meeting at 9.15am on Wednesday, June 26 at the Council Chamber in Cork City Hall.

 

A Book of Condolence was opened by the Lord Mayor at City Hall at 2.30pm on Monday, June 24 to mark the passing of the former Lord Mayor.

 

Over the weekend The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dan Boyle expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Bernard Allen. 

“I am saddened to learn of the death of Bernard Allen, a TD of 30 year’s experience and more particularly a former Lord Mayor of Cork. He was a public representative of strength and stature who served the city well, helping deliver vital sporting infrastructure and also playing a leading role in the establishment of Munster Technological University  (MTU), “ he said.
