Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald was delighted to launch an exciting new accessible initiative across Cork City’s Parks. Over the past 2 weeks, five wheelchair swings have been installed in 5 of Cork City’s parks:

  • Clashduv Park, Togher;
  • Ballinlough Park, Nursery Drive;
  • Pophams Park, Farranree;
  • Meelick Park, Ballyvolane;
  • Blarney Park, Blarney.

Each swing, costing over €20,000, allows a wheelchair user to enjoy the use of the swing whilst in their wheelchair. Proving to be one of the most popular play items for children, the swings are located within existing playgrounds to promote inclusivity and accessibility.

The Irish Wheelchair Association has welcomed the initiative, and the reaction from wheelchair users has been extremely positive.

Access to the units is gated, as the swing motion from the cradle could impact on someone who was unfamiliar with its operation. A universal key to access all units is available from the Parks & Recreation Department by emailing recreation@corkcity.ie, or by phoning ( 021) 492 4000.
