Wreath Laying Ceremony to honour Michael Fitzgerald

Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Joe Kavanagh and Head of UCC School of History Dr. Mervyn O'Driscoll lay wreaths at Gaol Cross in memory of Michael Fitzgerald

A Wreath laying ceremony held at Gaol Cross took place on Saturday 17 October 2020 to mark 100 years since the death of Cork hunger striker, Michael Fitzgerald.

It was attended by the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Joe Kavanagh, Lady Mayoress, Stephanie Kavanagh and Head of History at University College Cork, Dr. Mervyn O’Driscoll.

Michael Fitzgerald was the first of the Cork hunger strikers to die on 17 October 1920 at the age of 29.  His death was followed by those of Joe Murphy and Terence MacSwiney on 25 October.
